Dr. Yoon Awarded Grant from National Science Foundation (NSF)

Yoon Dr. Sejong Yoon has been awarded a $162,500 grant from the National Science Foundation for his collaborative research project as a part of a $999,150 grant with his collaborators at Rutgers University.

The project, named “Learning Joint Crowd-Space Embeddings for Cross-Modal Crowd Behavior Prediction,” will aim to design a new modeling and analysis framework for studying the human crowd’s motion and behaviors and their relationships to environmental structures. The project will engage TCNJ undergraduate student participants in this vital research and potential K-12 outreach with the Educational Administration and Secondary Education Department faculty’s help in the School of Education.

More details about Dr. Yoon’s research group and his work can be found on his website.

Congratulations to Dr. Yoon!

Dr. Uddipan Das Joins CS Department

Uddipan Das The Computer Science Department welcomes Dr. Uddipan Das to the Department faculty!

Dr. Das earned his B.Tech degree in Computer Science and Engineering from West Bengal University of Technology, his M.E. degree in Software Engineering from Jadavpur University, and his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Wichita State University.

His primary research interest centers around the design and development of data-driven algorithms and systems in smart cities; specifically, data management in smart electric power grid communication networks and smart environments for navigation and wayfinding for people with disabilities. In his Ph.D. dissertation, he proposed several quality-aware data management schemes for smart grid communication networks and also proposed a deep learning-based framework to assist people with visual impairments in outdoor wayfinding. He received Maha “Maggie” Sawan Fellowship at Wichita State University in 2016 for the excellence in academic achievement. He has published peer-reviewed research publications in the top-tier journal and conference venues, and he is a reviewer for the IEEE Systems Journal, IEEE ICDCS, IEEE NAPS, and IEEE IGSC, etc. He is an active member of IEEE, IEEE Computer Society, and IEEE Power & Energy Society.

Dr. Das conducts research in the area of smart cities focusing on the design and development of data-driven algorithms and systems in smart grids and smart living. In particular, his current research interest includes data management in communication networks of smart grids that can improve reliability and enable better management and control of electric meters in residential units, as well as the design and development of auxiliary wayfinding systems for people with visual impairments for smart living.

Dr. Das will teach one section (each) of CSC 199, CSC 215 and CSC 230 in Fall 2020.  Students interested in learning more about Dr. Das’s mentored research projects can email him at dasu@tcnj.edu.

Dr. Salgian Awarded Curriculum Grant for Fall 2020

Salgian Dr. Andrea Salgian has been awarded a $5,000 grant from Teach Access to support CS curriculum development.

The Teach Access Curriculum Development Award will provide support for the design and implementation of a user accessibility module in CSC 355 – Human Computer Interaction, which Dr. Salgian will be teaching this fall. The new module will help prepare students to become developers of technologies that are inclusive and accessible for all users.  Part of the funds will be used to acquire various computer interaction devices, such as body trackers and smart speakers.

A full list of the ten awardees, including Dr. Salgian, can be found on the Teach Access website: https://teachaccess.org/2020/07/2020-2021-curriculum-development-awardees-announced/

Congratulations again to Dr. Salgian!

Fall 2020 Wait-list: https://bit.ly/2P8h07J

If you make changes to your schedule after entering your submission to the wait-list and need to update the department on which course(s) must be dropped, email cs@tcnj.edu with this information or enter another wait-list submission.

We will not be signing students into courses until Monday, April 20, after the registration window closes.  Please do not email the department for updates before this time.  We will enroll students into any unfilled seats in order, based on their registration times and time they registered on the wait list.

Be sure that your intended course does not conflict with a course in your current schedule, and that you are willing to drop conflicting courses to make the change.  If you have a full course load or time conflict and do not indicate courses to drop on your wait-list submission, your submission will be disregarded.

As always, have a back-up plan in case you are not able to get into your preferred courses.

Please see the Advising Resources webpage for more information about submitting Mentored Research or Internship forms for Summer and Fall 2020.

Abstract:
Search engines have come a long way in the past twenty years as user needs and technology have changed. More and more, users are expecting search engines to know what they want rather than just be an index of web pages. In order to solve this very hard problem, they continue to incorporate techniques and patterns from many different computer science disciplines. From natural language understanding to databases, these disciplines help to build a semantic graph of knowledge. In this talk, we’ll go over some of those exciting problems and how Google is approaching them.

Bio:
After graduating in 2002 from The College of New Jersey Computer Science Department, Ryan Levering attended graduate school at SUNY Binghamton. There he made it almost all the way through a PhD dissertation in applied machine learning before deciding that he’d rather write code than papers. He spent some time in a flight search company working on machine learning systems before the company was acquired by Google, where he’d always wanted to work. Now he works on APIs and tools for Google to ingest structured data from the people who own it. He lives near Boston with his wife and two children.
