Transferring Into CS From Another Institution

Transferring Into CS From Another Institution

The Office of Admissions makes the decisions about admittance of students transferring into Computer Science (CS) programs from other institutions. Admission is based on College standards and New Jersey state guidelines on transfers from community colleges. The Office of Records and Registration is primarily responsible for evaluating courses for transfer credit; a student must receive a minimum grade of C for the course to be transferred to the College .

New Jersey community college students are encouraged to utilize the NJ Transfer (https://www.njtransfer.org/) website to determine transfer course equivalencies for most subject areas. See https://advisingresources.tcnj.edu/transfers/ for more details.

A course that meets the transfer credit requirements, as determined by the Office of Records and Registration, and that is listed on the NJ Transfer website as meeting a specific Computer Science course requirement is transferred automatically.

Courses that are not listed on the NJ Transfer website are not transferred automatically. Students may request the Department of Computer Science to review specific transferred courses for CS course credit. To request a review of a transferred course, email cs@tcnj.edu with the following information:

  • Course syllabus with a detailed list of topics covered,
  • Copies of graded assignments or projects completed later in the semester; include the assignment/project prompts, grades received, and rubrics if available.

To request a review of a transferred course for non-CS course credit, contact the chair of the department offering the equivalent course at TCNJ.

Students at NJ community colleges who intend to apply to transfer into CS at TCNJ are encouraged to take introductory computer science courses that will meet the requirements for CS course credit, as listed on the NJ Transfer website. It is also advisable to enter TCNJ having completed Calculus I, or prepared to take Calculus I in the first semester at TCNJ.

An individualized program plan is developed for each transfer student in consultation with the Department Chair and/or the assigned CS academic advisor.
